Meet Johnpaul Pereira alias PauliCuts who has been, you guessed it, cutting hair in Queens for the past 19 years. ‘Pauli’ started his own business 6 years ago when he had a chance to buy a space and decided to bite the bullet. His hair cutting saga began when he immigrated to New York from Guyana at 19 years old, with only $7 in his pocket and found work at a barber shop 3 days later. He has never done anything but barbering and barbering has given him a foundation in this country. He began cutting hair at a local shop on 80th Street and Jamaica and then moved to another shop, right in the neighborhood. Pauli reminisces about cutting his friends’ hair back in high school for prom. Pauli does every barbering service, available.
He currently has 3 barbers working for him in his 7-chair barbershop and a woman who
does braids, dubbed ‘Jenny Braids’. He has seen many of his barbers move on to open their own businesses throughout the years and it makes him feel proud that they are bettering themselves.
Pauli is active in the community, offering various specials and giving out hotdogs and hamburgers for the shop’s anniversary. He plans on doing more community events, such as a sneaker drive and collecting backpacks for kids. Pauli loves barbering and says it is a good profession to get involved in. He encourages young people to ‘pick up the clippers’. Pauli is married with 4 kids and a grandchild. Outside of work, he enjoys playing football and basketball.
